Digital Citizenship/Honorable Use of Technology

Teachers regularly discuss the expectations that the school and the Calgary Board of Education have around the honorable use of technology. This document is sent home annually with students to be reviewed with parents.

  • Teachers monitor student accounts while at school.
  • If parents become aware of a concern around the ethical use of technology, please do not hesitate to call the school or email the teacher and or school administration.
  • Students are not permitted to use cell phones during school hours.

Computers in the Classroom

Technology is a key element integrated into the learning process for all students. Through the use of a variety of programs and tools, students are given an opportunity to demonstrate learning in personalized ways.

Students who are accessing technology at school must be under the direct supervision of a staff member. This applies to devices owned by The Calgary Board of Education and personal devices.

Digital Citizenship Plan

This plan is one component of the CBE Digital Citizenship Process.

  • The Silver Springs Digital Citizenship plan is compliant with Administrative Regulation 1062 Use of Electronic Resources and is posted on the website.
  • Staff monitor student use of the Internet at all times.
  • Teachers supervise and support students during Internet-based activities by walking around the work area and monitoring students’ actions. Such supervision helps to ensure appropriate conduct and the appropriate use of CBE information technology resources.
  • Teachers provide direct instruction on identifying appropriate and useful information when using the internet as well as what to do if a student should come across something deemed inappropriate.
  • Teachers identify and report problems of inappropriate or unacceptable Internet access by students to the school principal and/or teacher.
  • The CBE provides an approved list of reliable and authoritative resources.
  • Teachers help students learn to evaluate the quality of material and information being accessed and used for learning purposes.

Professional Development

  • Teachers review the digital citizenship plan each year and update to keep it current with technological advances.
  • Teachers access the Digital Citizenship Plan and associated resources through the CBE website.

Digital Citizenship at the CBE

Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.

Visit the CBE website to learn more about how we support students to develop online safety skills and be good digital citizens.

Personal Mobile Devices

Student personal mobile devices are limited or restricted at all schools, unless required for health or medical needs, to support specialized learning needs, and for educational purposes. Learn more about our BYOD (bring your own device) rules.

Web Filtering & Social Media

Inappropriate or unsafe content may be blocked to provide a safe environment: some content is blocked for all users, and other content may be suitable for older students but not for younger ones. Student access to known social media platforms is blocked on school networks and school devices for all grade levels.
