Dear Silver Springs School Parents and Guardians,

Wishing you all a wonderful Family Day long weekend and a reminder that there is no school tomorrow, Monday, February 19. We have a short but busy week ahead with our grade trips to the Scotties and our Pink Shirt Day Assembly on Friday, February 23 at 11:30. We are holding our Pink Shirt Day gathering early, as we will be very busy with our Evergreen Theatre drama residency during the week of February 26 – March 1. Families are invited to both our assembly and the residency showcase. Please watch for invitations to several surveys being sent to you. The completion of these surveys helps us in planning for the coming school year.

Scottie’s Curling Tournament: We are excited that all our grade teams will be attending the Scotties Tournament of Hearts this coming week. We have been awarded complimentary tickets for our Grade 1 – 6 students, staff and volunteers to attend a morning at this event. This half day school off-site activity to the WinSport Arena, will occur on February 20th (Gr. 3 & 4), 21st (Gr. 5 & 6) and 22nd (Gr. 1 & 2), from 8:30am until 11:45am. As spectators for this national event, students will be learning some rules and etiquette of the game, encouraged to cheer on team Alberta, and hopefully gain some inspiration for our upcoming “Rocks and Rings” Physical Education residency in April. Please note that this is a nationally televised event.

School Planning Parent Engagement: We would like to thank the families who joined us at Tuesday’s School Council Meeting where we shared the goals of the school development plan. Our SDP goals are focused on improving student literacy, numeracy and well-being at school through a holistic theme of new curriculum implementation. Specifically, our goal states:

  • Through the lens of diversity and inclusion, our staff will focus on how to best structure our programming and assessment within the new curriculum to support the broad range of student needs and abilities in our school environment.
  • Our focus this year will be to continue unpacking new curriculum outcomes and learning progressions across all subject areas, providing scaffolded entry points for students to achieve the new curriculum expectations.

For more details, the complete Silver Springs School development plan can be found here.

During that same presentation, administration shared how the school budget was allocated for the current school year and explained the approved school fees. Your feedback regarding the School Development Plan, budget and fees is important to us. The feedback will assist us in planning for the upcoming school year. The survey will remain open until March 15, 2024. You can access the survey using this link: https://silversprings.cbedialogue.com/en/projects/silver-springs-school-2023-24-school-year/engagements/silver-springs-school-planning-survey-2024

On-Going Registration and Returning to Silver Springs Survey: Kindergarten registration is ongoing as is registration for students new to Silver Springs entering grades 1-6. If you know of families looking to enroll at Silver Springs School for the upcoming school year, please have them contact the school at 403-777-6070. To help us get an accurate count of students returning to Silver Springs School for the 2024-2025 we ask that parents complete this survey for each child in the family. Accurate enrolment data is key to ensuring we staff accordingly for the next school year. We are currently projected at 270 students for the 2024-2025 school year. As such, an early understanding of our enrolment numbers will be beneficial as we look at grade configurations and school organization beginning next month. We kindly ask that you complete this form no later than March 11, 2024.

Teacher Weekly Messages: As part of our commitment to on-going communication with families about student learning, our teachers send home weekly updates via SchoolMessenger. Please make sure you read these important messages to find out more about what your child is doing at school, community walks, special events, and requests for project materials. These messages can be shared with your child. Please use them to help guide conversations and to find out even more about your child’s learning. These conversations will help extend their interest, engagement and understanding. We thank you for being part of your child’s learning journey.

Alberta Education Assurance Survey: Each year Alberta Education sends a survey to all parents and legal guardians of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 to gather important information on the quality of education provided by school authorities and their schools. This year’s survey packages from Alberta Education should already have arrived or be on their way by mail to our grade 4 families. We kindly ask that you complete this survey by March 1, 2024.
