Dear Silver Springs School Parents and Guardians,

Thank you to the many families who were able to join our Pink Shirt Day assembly on Friday afternoon. It is always nice to have an audience to perform for and for families to celebrate these moments with us.  I was so proud of our students and staff for putting together this wonderful event. Messages of kindness, friendship, and belonging were shared through songs, story, poems, and drama skits.

Evergreen Theatre Residency: Silver Springs School is thrilled about the upcoming Evergreen Theatre artist-in-residence program from February 26 to March 1, 2024. This enriching experience has been made possible through the dedication of our school council and funds raised through volunteer hours at a casino last June.

Evergreen Theatre’s innovative curriculum-linked residencies get kids teaching their peers about science and the environment through theatre. Using inquiry-based learning, students are challenged to discover meaning and relevance in curriculum linked topics pertinent to natural, scientific and environmental issues. Students "Grow A Show" through a series of playwriting and performance workshops over a period of one week. The Grow-A-Show program places a team of theatre professionals in our school where each artist offers a unique blend of science, scene building, scriptwriting, character creation, choreography, co-operative dramatic games, and improvisation. The artists will lead the school in the creation, rehearsal, and performance of a brand new, science inspired work of theatre, showcasing the students in an environmental extravaganza of their own invention. Combining arts with science education provides a basis towards creating vibrant self-expression and a deeper, more personalized understanding of concrete subject matter. In addition to nourishing individual imagination and creativity, the Grow-A-Show program also develops a school-wide sense of teamwork and collaboration. The culmination of this creative journey promises to be a fun and high-energy performance to share with the school community at 11:30am on Friday, March 1.

Alberta Education Assurance Survey: Each year Alberta Education sends a survey to all parents and legal guardians of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 to gather important information on the quality of education provided by school authorities and their schools. This year’s survey packages from Alberta Education should already have arrived or be on their way by mail to our grade 4 families. We kindly ask that you complete this survey by March 1, 2024.

School Planning Parent Engagement:  Your feedback regarding the School Development Plan, budget and fees is important to us. The feedback will assist us in planning for the upcoming school year. The survey will remain open until March 15, 2024. You can access the survey using this link: https://silversprings.cbedialogue.com/en/projects/silver-springs-school-2023-24-school-year/engagements/silver-springs-school-planning-survey-2024

On-Going Registration and Returning to Silver Springs Survey: Kindergarten registration is ongoing as is registration for students new to Silver Springs entering grades 1-6. If you know of families looking to enroll at Silver Springs School for the upcoming school year, please have them contact the school at 403-777-6070. To help us get an accurate count of students returning to Silver Springs School for the 2024-2025 we ask that parents complete this survey for each child in the family. Accurate enrolment data is key to ensuring we staff accordingly for the next school year. We are currently projected at 270 students for the 2024-2025 school year. As such, an early understanding of our enrolment numbers will be beneficial as we look at grade configurations and school organization beginning next month. We kindly ask that you complete this form no later than March 11, 2024.

Lunch Supervision Overdue Accounts: The Student Fees department will be sending any unpaid lunch supervision accounts from the 2022-23 school year to a collection agency starting on Wednesday February 15.  If you still have unpaid fees from last year, you can come into the school office and pay by credit card in the office.  (Cash and cheques not accepted at the school office.)

Tax Receipts for Lunch Supervision: Did you know that you can claim your lunch supervision payment as a childcare expense on your income tax return?  Tax receipts for lunch supervision will be available on your MyCBE/PowerSchool parent account by February 28.  Tax receipts will not be mailed out and will be available online only.  Here are the instructions on how to find your tax receipt on your account.  https://insite.cbe.ab.ca/quicklinks-apps/rycor/Documents/View-Download-Tax-Receipts-for-Parents.pdf
