Dear Silver Springs School Parents and Guardians,

Swimming Update: We are disappointed to inform you that we will not be able to offer our students swimming lessons this year. Due to the time it will take to repair the city’s broken water main in Bowness and the on-going citywide water restrictions, the Silver Springs Outdoor Pool will NOT be able to fill the pool, test the water and inspect the pool in time for our scheduled swimming lessons.  Please complete the following survey to inform the school of your decision on how we can reimburse any paid swim fees by no later than Tuesday, June 18, 2024 by 4:00pm.  After this date, we will be processing refund cheques only for families of students that are in grade 6 or those not returning to Silver Springs School for the 2024-25 school year. All other funds will be rolled over in PowerSchool as a credit for the coming year. https://forms.office.com/r/qHssPCUkQB

Grade 6 and Year-End Farewell: Our staff and a small parent committee are busy planning for our Grade 6 and Year-End Farewell that will be held on WednesdayJune 26, 2024. Families are invited to join us for this assembly at 9:15am. We then invite the families of our grade 6 students to attend a short stand-up reception in our Learning Commons, where students and parents can visit, take photos, and celebrate this special occasion.

Fort & Friendship Day: To enhance our sense of community and celebrate a wonderful year together, we are organizing a buddy activity based on student input. On June 24th, buddy teams will be working together to build blanket/sheet forts before settling in and enjoying the pleasure of reading together by flashlight.  Building materials could include flat sheets, thin blankets and clamps/large binder clips to attach materials to desks and chairs. Please send labelled materials that your child is familiar with, in a labeled bag, so that we are better able to help in return them to the correct bag when cleaning up. In the past, families have found using coloured duct tape or washi tape an effective way to label clips and clamps.

Planning for Next Year: As new student registrations continue to come in and some existing families identifying that they are moving outside of our community over the summer, our student numbers continue to fluctuate for the 2024-2025 school year. Currently, we are planning our staffing on conservatively.  We have changed our classroom numbers at some of our grade levels based on these changes; One AM kindergarten classes, three classes of grade 1 / 2, three classes of grades 3/4, and three classes of grades 5/ 6.  With these changes and the need to create an improved balance in classrooms, please be aware that there may be shifts of students to a different classroom/ teacher for the coming year. Our grade 2 students will be most significantly impacted as we endeavor to create three balanced classroom communities from the four existing groups.

Staffing Updates: This week, we want to take the time to identify several staff members who will not be returning to Silver Springs School for the 2024-25 school year, as they are moving on to new opportunities. We have been a better school because of these people:

  • Miss Melissa Milton has been on a temporary contract with us this year. We are so thankful for her dedication and hard work with our grade 1 and 2 students in room 4. Sadly, her contract ends at the end of June. We do hope that new opportunities in the CBE become available to her.
  • Ms. April Brown has been on a temporary contract with us this year. We are so thankful for her commitment and hard work with our grade 5 and 6 students in room 9. Sadly, her contract also ends at the end of June. We wish her all the best as new opportunities in the CBE become available to her as well.
  • Mrs. Laree Lake once again joined our staff in February as our Literacy and Mathematics Intervention teacher. Unfortunately, funding for this position ended on June 7. We hope to see Mrs. Lake back in the fall in a guest teacher capacity, but also wish her well as she enjoys some travelling in her retirement.

Library Book Returns: With the end of the school year quickly approaching, we need to make sure that our library books are returned and accounted for. Please take some time to look around the house and return any overdue books that belong to the school. The final week for book exchanges will be June 2 –7, with all books needing to be back at school no later than June 14.
