Dear Silver Springs School Parents and Guardians,
We look forward to our final week of the 2023-24 school year. This will be a busy one with our Fort and Friendship Day on Monday, our Farewell Assembly and Grade 6 Farewell on Wednesday, and only a half day of school on Thursday – our final day.
Swim Fee Refunds: All requested refunds have been processed and sent home with students on Thursday, June 20. If you did not complete the survey or are not moving from our school next year, your swim fees have been applied as a credit to your PowerSchool account. Please note that if there were any previous outstanding fees on your account, the CBE central fees department applied the swim payment to these.
National Indigenous Peoples Day was honored on June 21st. On this day we recognized the diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples in Canada. We also took this day to make our annual commitment to action in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Commision of Canada’s call to action. Please use this link to find our commitment for the 2024-25 school year.
Fort & Friendship Day: To enhance our sense of community and celebrate a wonderful year together, we are organizing a buddy activity based on student input. On June 24th, buddy teams will be working together to build blanket/sheet forts before settling in and enjoying the pleasure of reading together by flashlight. Building materials could include flat sheets, thin blankets and clamps/large binder clips to attach materials to desks and chairs. Please send labelled materials that your child is familiar with, in a labeled bag, so that we are better able to help in return them to the correct bag when cleaning up. In the past, families have found using coloured duct tape or washi tape an effective way to label clips and clamps.
2024-2025 School Calendar: Please find attached our calendar for the upcoming school year. Note that we start on August 29, 2024, and have adjusted our recess breaks as well as our lunch break to allow for a common lunch time for all students.
Grade 6 and Year-End Farewell: Our staff and a small parent committee are busy planning for our Grade 6 and Year-End Farewell that will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. Families are invited to join us for this assembly at 9:15am. We then invite the families of our grade 6 students to attend a short stand-up reception in our Learning Commons, where students and parents can visit, take photos, and celebrate this special occasion.
Viewing Report Cards: The CBE no longer prints report cards in January or June to send home with students. Families can view online report cards on June 26 using your MyCBE parent account. Report cards can also be downloaded and printed by families at home. They will only be available for viewing until July 26, 2024. For best access to information, login to the MyCBE portal instead of using the PowerSchool app. Need help? Check out this video for more information on how to sign in, navigate the portal, toggle between more than one child’s report card, and more. Staffing Updates: We want to take the time to identify several staff members who will not be returning to Silver Springs School for the 2024-25 school year, as they are moving on to new opportunities. We have been a better school because of these people:
· Miss Melissa Milton has been on a temporary contract with us this year. We are so thankful for her dedication and hard work with our grade 1 and 2 students in room 4. Sadly, her contract ends at the end of June. We do hope that new opportunities in the CBE become available to her.
· Ms. April Brown has been on a temporary contract with us this year. We are so thankful for her commitment and hard work with our grade 5 and 6 students in room 9. Sadly, her contract also ends at the end of June. We wish her all the best as new opportunities in the CBE become available to her as well.
· Mrs. Laree Lake once again joined our staff in February as our Literacy and Mathematics Intervention teacher. Unfortunately, funding for this position ended on June 7. We hope to see Mrs. Lake back in the fall in a guest teacher capacity, but also wish her well as she enjoys some travelling in her retirement.
