Dear Silver Springs School Parents and Guardians,

Terry Fox Run: Our school continues to be a dedicated supporter of the Terry Fox School Run and on Friday, September 20, we were excited to run in Terry’s memory, even if it was a little cool and rainy! We believe that Terry Fox is a true Canadian Hero who demonstrated the qualities of perseverance, resilience, and selflessness while waging his own personal battle against cancer. Through nurturing these qualities in our students, we hope that they might be better equipped to succeed as they face many small and large challenges in their lives.  If your family wishes to still participate in donating to The Terry Fox Foundation in support of cancer research, the Foundation has created an online fundraising page customized for our school. Please use this method to donate rather than sending cash to the school.

Donate online at: https://schools.terryfox.ca/72071

·         Click the link above to donate or search for our school name at terryfox.org

·         Receipts are issued immediately to donors by email from the Terry Fox Foundation

Orange Shirt Day at Silver Springs School – Sept. 26th: Staff and students will recognize National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on Thursday, September 26, as there is no school on Sept 30th. Please wear an ORANGE (or Orange-ish) shirt on this day or your favorite shirt. Classes will take up the topic of the day in various ways that are appropriate to the age and maturity. This may include sharing a piece of literature of to help students connect and reflect on the Residential School experience, sharing a video to help students recognize the importance of Truth and Reconciliation, and/ or sharing an oral story that helps children recognize and express gratitude for the gift of a warm and loving learning community at Silver Springs.

Open House Presentations: If you were not able to attend our open house evening on September 12th, or if you wish to read through the grade team slideshow presentations again, they are now posted on our school website. Please use this link to direct you to the correct page.

CBE Student Code of Conduct: Part of our opening school year requirements is to apprise families and students of the CBE Student Code of Conduct. Administrative Regulation (AR) 6005 provides in-depth information about how these matters are managed within the CBE. Additionally, Silver Springs School has established a method of supporting students to work through these situations. We hold the belief that we all make mistakes, that these mistakes do not make us bad people, and those mistakes are opportunities for learning. It is extremely important to distinguish the behaviour from the person. For more on our Code of Conduct visit our Silver Springs School Our School webpage. For more on CBE Student Discipline Administrative Regulation visit www.cbe.ab.ca

Student Drop off and Pick-up: Safety outside the school remains a top priority. We continue to encourage all parents and guardians to choose safety over convenience during drop off and pick up of students. A reminder that there is signage indicating that pick-up and drop-off of students in the parking lot is prohibited. Additionally, there is no parking on the street in front of the staff parking lot, as this area must be left available for our school bus and daycare vehicles. Please adhere to these rules for the safety of all students in the school.

Dressing Appropriately for School: Students should be dressed to go outside for recess and lunch - rain or shine. Our temperature within the school can also vary from area to area, so please remember to dress your child in layers that enable them to cool off (especially during a PE class) and warm up if they are in a classroom that is set at a cooler temperature. We also remind all students that dress and grooming at Silver Springs School should reflect that this is a place of work and learning. As such, we request that student dress is respectful and appropriate for the school environment: i.e., no revealing clothing, no bare stomachs, or any items that have messages that could offend others. We thank all parents/guardians for their support with this.

Safety Reminders: We would like to remind our Silver Springs School families that scooters, bikes and skateboards are not to be ridden on the school compound or the sidewalk that runs in along the front of our school as this is a busy place at drop-off and pick-up time. We ask that students, parents and siblings dismount and walk all scooters, bikes and skateboards through this area.

Important Health and Medical Forms for Parents: As we prioritize the safety and well-being of all students, we kindly remind parents to complete two essential health forms for any child with severe allergies or medical conditions. The Student Health Emergency Response Protocol Form must be submitted every September to inform staff of any medical concerns, including allergies. This helps ensure that all staff are aware of your child’s needs. In cases where medication must be administered during school hours, parents must also complete a Student Health Plan. This plan, once approved by the principal, allows staff to safely store and administer the necessary medication, which will be kept in a locked cabinet in the office. Please note that the school cannot provide general medications (such as pain relief or allergy pills) to students under any circumstances.

Additionally, we remind families that we are a Nut Aware School. Several students have life-threatening allergies to nuts, including peanuts. To ensure the safety of all students, we ask that parents avoid sending any foods that contain nuts or nut products to school. Even trace amounts of nut oils or nut-based ingredients can pose serious risks to these students. Please be mindful when packing lunches and snacks, and remind your children not to share or trade food with others. Your cooperation is essential in creating a safe environment for everyone.

Sincerely,

Michelle Ryskamp,

Principal, Silver Springs School

School Council Fun Lunches: Fun lunches are a great way to help fundraise for our school and give parents a reprieve from making lunches one day a week. Our council however does not want students to be left out of this fun opportunity if families are experiencing financial constraints. Since we have generous families who make donations to our Healthy Hunger account, we are able to donate lunches if required. If you feel that your families may be in need of a donated lunch we ask you to please email Mrs. Ryskamp at mcryskamp@cbe.ab.ca two weeks prior to any upcoming fun lunch with this request and your child's order.

Thank you!
