Dear Silver Springs School Parents and Guardians,
During the month of February, we will continue to promote a sense of belonging at Silver Springs School. On Tuesday, February 7, World Read Aloud Day, Mrs. Ryskamp and Ms. Burrows will pop into classrooms to read a variety of picture books related to friendship, kindness, and belonging. During the week of February 12 –16, we will celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week, inviting students to show kindness in various ways to others in our school community. Our Blue Buddy team will be hosting our Pink Shirt Day Assembly on Friday, February 23. During that week we will spend time as a school reviewing important friendship skills and ways to solve “friendship fires”. Our aim is to create a more kind, inclusive learning community by raising awareness of bullying prevention and promoting healthy relationships. The school community is encouraged to wear pink on this day.
Staffing Update: Through Alberta Education’s Learning Disruption Grant, our school has been allocated a part-time intervention teacher for a 10-week period spanning February 5 – April 12. We are excited to welcome Mrs. Laree Lake back to this position. She will work with small groups of children and provide focused, explicit instruction to build literacy and numeracy skills. Many of our students worked with Mrs. Lake last year or have met her as a guest teacher in their classrooms. For those students identified as requiring additional support through Alberta Education assessments completed earlier this fall as well as classroom-based assessments, parents will be receiving a message of notification by Tuesday, February 6.
Valentine’s Day: We have reached the middle point of the school year and with that, Valentine's Day is just around the corner. We would like to keep a low-key approach to this day and keep things focused on friendship, belonging, and kindness. On this day, our teachers will find a way to make connections to curriculum and learning as it relates to each grade grouping. If students choose to bring in Valentines for others, we ask that they do so for all classmates, so as not to leave anyone out. We also ask that you do not send in any candy, food treats or gifts.
Student Assessment and Reporting: On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, term 1 report cards became accessible to families for viewing. Please log in to your MyCBE account to view your child’s report card. Report cards will remain available for active viewing until the end of July 2024.
Alberta Education Assurance Survey: Each year Alberta Education sends a survey to all parents and legal guardians of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 to gather important information on the quality of education provided by school authorities and their schools. This year’s survey packages from Alberta Education should already have arrived or be on their way by mail to our grade 4 families. The survey package includes:
- a copy of the Education Minister’s letter to parents/guardians;
- a letter containing a Random Access Code (RAC) for accessing the survey online; and
- instructions for accessing the survey in other languages.
Completing the survey online is the quickest way for Alberta Education to receive a completed response but parents/guardians can still choose to complete the survey on paper. Those wishing to complete the survey on paper may request a copy from the System Assurance Branch directly, or contact their school administration, who will contact the System Assurance Branch on their behalf. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Burrows through our front office at 403-777-6070. Please complete the survey by March 1, 2024.
CBE 2024-2025 School Calendar: The 2024-2025 CBE instructional calendar has been approved. Please note that the first day of school is Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024. Please access the calendar using this link.
CBE Education Planning Engagement for Parents: The CBE is seeking parent input to shape the new Education Plan for 2024-2027. Share your insights using this survey.
