Dear Silver Springs School Parents and Guardians,

Calgary West Soccer Residency: What a great way to start back after winter break! Both students and teachers have really enjoyed working with the skilled and passionate coaches from Calgary West Football Club. In one short week, it was clear to see that our students’ soccer skills have improved. We are looking forward to a second week of soccer residency in the spring, from April 2-5, 2024. To keep this excitement going, Calgary West has invited our students to three free sessions on Friday evenings, January 19, 26, and February 2 from 5:00 –6:00pm at the Bearspaw Lifestyle Centre. Please see the attached PDF document for more information and a registration link.

Grade 1 Generosity Initiative: As part of the Grade 1’s inquiry into “The Meaning of Community”, students would like to help the Calgary Food Bank by making birthday-in-a bag kits for children who might not otherwise enjoy the luxury of a birthday party. We are inviting you, our community, to donate items until January 19, 2024. Grade 1 students will then be collecting, organizing and tallying donations of birthday kit items. Donations may include some or all of the following items: cake mix, balloons, decorative party plate, cake icing, birthday cards, birthday candles, napkins, gifts bags, a small gift or book. Items can be dropped off at our school office. The grade 1's greatly appreciate your help with such a worthy and meaningful cause. They can’t wait to gather, sort and share some Silver Springs Spirit! Please follow the link for a complete list of items you can donate for our initiative and more information about Calgary Food Banks Birthday Party Kits.  https://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/CFB-BirthdayPartyKit.pdf

Scottie’s Curling Tournament: We are pleased to announce that all our grade team applications to Curl Canada for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts tickets have been accepted. We have been awarded complimentary tickets for all our students, staff and volunteers to attend a morning at this event. This half day school off-site activity to the WinSport Arena, will occur on February 20th (Gr. 3 & 4), 21st (Gr. 5 & 6) and 22nd (Gr. 1 & 2), from 8:30am until 11:45am. As spectators for this national event, students will be learning some rules and etiquette of the game, encouraged to cheer on team Alberta, and hopefully gain some inspiration for our upcoming “Rocks and Rings” Physical Education residency in April. Please note that this is a nationally televised event.  A $7.00 fee for this trip will be added to your CBE account to cover the cost of bussing.

Kindergarten Registration for the 2024-25 school year begins January 15, 2024. For children to be eligible to register and attend kindergarten next school year, they must turn five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2024. When registering your child for school, there are several things you should consider. Our CBE Kindergarten Registration Guide can help answer many of your questions. Please note that AM/ PM class placements are based on the following considerations:

  • A review of student registrations and parent questionnaires to identify family and student needs (busing, family arrangements for transportation, childcare, etc.)
  • Balancing class lists based on student numbers, student needs (English as an Additional Language learners and student complexities), gender, available school support

Dressing for the Weather: This coming week we will continue to experience chilly temperatures and expect to start the week with a blue day, keeping students in for recess and lunch, as temperatures will be below –20 degrees Celsius with the windchill.  As the week progresses, please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately and prepared to be outside for recess and lunch break. They should be wearing boots, a winter jacket, snowpants, a toque/ hat, gloves, and scarf or neck warmer.

Student Drop off and Pick-up: With colder weather, we continue to encourage all parents and guardians to choose safety over convenience during drop off and pick up of students. A reminder that there is signage indicating that picking up and dropping off students in the parking lot is prohibited. Also, please find a safe place to park before dropping off students. We also encourage you to set a good example and use the crosswalk when crossing the road with your children. Please adhere to these rules for the safety of all students in the school.

Principal, Silver Springs School
