Dear Silver Springs School Parents and Guardians,
Happy New Year! We hope that you had a fun, restful, and joy-filled winter break. We look forward to seeing our school community return on Monday, January 8, 2024. We are excited to hear students share their stories of holiday celebrations and winter adventures. We are also looking forward to jumping back into new learning tasks and continuing our learning journey together.
Calgary West Soccer Residency: We begin the year 2024 with a week-long PE residency with Calgary West Soccer Association. We look forward to seeing our students engage in learning with this passionate team from CWS. We are excited for our students to develop their soccer skills and common understandings of game rules and play. A thank you goes out to our school council for funding this opportunity and to Chad Ravlo for connecting us with the Calgary West Soccer team.
Kindergarten Registration for the 2024-25 school year begins January 15, 2024. For children to be eligible to register and attend kindergarten next school year, they must turn five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2024. When registering your child for school, there are several things you should consider. Our CBE Kindergarten Registration Guide can help answer many of your questions.
Dressing for the Weather: This coming week we will be experiencing more seasonal weather with much colder temperatures than we have seen yet this winter. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately and prepared to be outside for recess and lunch break. They should be wearing boots, a winter jacket, snowpants, a toque/ hat, gloves, and scarf or neck warmer. In cases of extreme weather, when the temperature including windchill is –20 degrees Celsius or below, staff will plan to bring students inside the school before the bell starting at 8:15, plan for an indoor recess and /or lunch break.
Student Drop off and Pick-up: Safety outside the school remains a top priority. With the upcoming forecast for colder weather, we continue to encourage all parents and guardians to choose safety over convenience during drop off and pick up of students. A reminder that there is signage indicating that picking up and dropping off students in the parking lot is prohibited. Additionally, there is no parking on the street in front of the staff parking lot, as this area must be left available for our school bus and daycare vehicles. Please adhere to these rules for the safety of all students in the school.
Attendance: When your child will be late or absent, please call the Attendance Line to report the information. We need to know each day when your child will not be at school and the reason for their absence (e.g. ill, doctor’s appointment, family event, etc). The Attendance Line is available 24hrs/7days at 403-777-6070 extension 1 or you may email the school at SilverSprings@cbe.ab.ca. Reporting lates and absences consistently means that our office staff can complete daily attendance quickly to ensure the safety of all students.

SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATES
Santa’s Workshop: Thank you to everyone who donated to and volunteered with Santa’s Workshop! We hope you and your family enjoyed receiving your new treasures as much as the students appeared to enjoy choosing them. If you have any feedback, please email School Council (sssparentcouncil@gmail.com). Keep us in mind as you declutter. We will accept more donations in the spring - stay tuned!
Healthy Hunger: Next Fun Lunch: Costa Vida on Jan 24 (Order by Jan 19th) The remaining fun lunches and snacks have been added to the website for the rest of the school year, so you can logon to your account and select/prepay for any of the dates you wish!

Next Council Meeting: Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 16th from 6:30-8:30pm at Silver Springs School. There will also be the option to join online. We hope to see you there.
