Dear Silver Springs School Parents and Guardians,

Don’t forget it was the end of Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, November 5th at 2:00am! Have you turned your clocks back an hour yet?

Halloween: The Halloween Howler was a smashing success! The students were so excited to participate in the many activities with their grade teams. Thank you to Erin Benner, our School Council Special Events coordinator, for taking the lead on this special event. Many thanks to all the other parents who volunteered to help set up, run stations, or clean-up. We are so grateful for such an involved and supportive parent community. Thank you to the many families who also joined us for our Halloween costume parade. Students were so excited to show off their costumes and see the creative costume choices of their schoolmates.

Remembrance Day: This week, we commemorate Remembrance Day during our school assembly on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 11:00 am. We invite families to join us this year, to remember the sacrifices of the past and honour those who fought for our country so that we have a brighter future. Seating for students and families will begin at 10:45am.

Fall Break: A reminder that this year the CBE has included a fall break in our calendar. There is no school for students from Thursday, November 9 to Tuesday, November 14. We look forward to seeing them back at school on Wednesday, November 15, 2023.

School Conferences: Our next set of School Conferences are scheduled for Thursday November 23 and Friday November 24.  Nov. 23 is a regular school day for students in grades 1-6 (no school for Kindergarten students).  Nov 24 there is no school for all students.  The booking system will open to parents at 4:00pm on Wednesday, November 15. To book a School Conference, please login to your MyCBE/PowerSchool parent account and click the link for School Conferences.

Jacket Racket: Silver Springs School will be participating in a community service initiative by supporting Jacket Racket this year between October 30 and November 8, 2023. Jacket Racket has been providing clean, gently used winter jackets to Calgary children since the 1980’s. The project runs every year from mid-October to mid-November. Gently used/clean coats, snow pants, hats and mittens will be collected at the school until November 8. Boots cannot be collected as part of this campaign. You can send donated items (bagged) with your children to the school and they will be picked up from the classrooms in the morning by our Peace Ambassadors.  Items will be sorted by our student team and dropped off on November 17, 2023 to the Jacket Racket organization. We need a volunteer or two to help with the final drop-off. If you can help deliver the items on November 17 between 10:00 am and 12:00 to the warehouse location, please contact Ms. Burrows at dsburrows@cbe.ab.ca

Lunch Supervision, Bus Fees, and Student Supply Fees: These fees have been added to MyCBE parent accounts as of October 16.  The lunch supervision fee is $305/year. The bus fee is $260/year.  The student supply fee is $40 (grade 1-6 students) and $20 for Kindergarten students. You can now login and pay all or part of your fees.  If you need to apply for a fee waiver, it is better to do it sooner rather than later. Here is a link to information on fee waivers https://www.cbe.ab.ca/registration/fees-and-waivers/Pages/Waivers.aspx

Contacting our Front Office: We kindly ask that if you have inquiries about fees and payments, fun lunches (ordering or missed orders), lost and found items, school photos, attendance, volunteering, police checks, or notices, that you contact Mrs. Bouchart directly in our front office at 403-777-6070 or  mlbouchart@cbe.ab.ca.

Children’s Mental Health and Parenting Summit: This annual summit is hosted by the Institute of Child Psychology and is happening from November 14 to 17. This year, this ground breaking event is entirely FREE and brings together a diverse community of parents, professionals, researchers, and authors, all dedicated to exploring the science of parenting and fostering positive mental health in our children. Register NOW for FREE!

Sincerely,

Michelle Ryskamp,

Principal, Silver Springs School

SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATES

School Council Meeting: Join us for our next School Council meeting on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 6:30-8:30pm. Please note that this month’s meeting has been shifted by a week to accommodate for our fall break.

Halloween Howler: We would like to thank the school admin, teachers, students, parents, and volunteers for all their support for this year's Halloween Howler.  It was a hoot!

Santa's Workshop: As you declutter before Christmas, please consider setting aside your gently used gift items for this year's Santa's Workshop that will take place in early December.  We are looking for new or gently used toys, games, puzzles, mugs, hobby items, home decor and fan memorabilia, etc. for siblings, Moms and Dads. Please DO NOT bring in the following items: sharp items (tools and kitchen), toiletries, small appliances, clothing and stuffed toys. Please hold onto your treasures at home for now and watch for updates coming soon!

For this event, the School Council sets up tables in the gym, similar to a large garage sale. Your child will be given a chance to “shop” for gifts for their immediate family members in December. More info on the workshop date and donation drop-off date to come.
