Annual CBE Online Forms –OVERDUE: Each year, schools have a variety of forms that parents / legal guardians are required to complete or review and update, some of which are paper and others online. In CBE, the forms that have now shifted to an online format (SchoolEngage) are:

CBE Student Code of Conduct: Part of our opening school year requirements is to apprise families and students of the CBE Student Code of Conduct. Administrative Regulation (AR) 6005 provides in-depth information about how these matters are managed within the CBE. Additionally, Silver Springs School has established a method of supporting students to work through these situations. We hold the belief that we all make mistakes, that these mistakes do not make us bad people, and those mistakes are opportunities for learning. It is extremely important to distinguish the behaviour from the person. For more on our Code of Conduct visit our Silver Springs School Our School webpage. For more on CBE Student Discipline Administrative Regulation visit www.cbe.ab.ca

International Walk to School Week October 2-6 ,2023: International Walk to School Week gives children, parents, teachers and the community an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking. In 2011, millions of children, parents, and community leaders from 40 countries around the world joined together in celebration of International Walk to School Week in October. We know that many of our students and families walk to school on a daily basis already. However, if this is not part of your normal routine, we encourage you to try to fit this into your schedule once this week.

Dressing for the Weather - As October has begun and we are seeing cooler mornings and variable weather conditions throughout the day, please make sure that your child has the appropriate clothing for recess, lunch break, and / or community walks. You may consider packing a pair of light gloves and a toque along. Please make sure that they have an appropriate jacket to wear and /or an umbrella if the forecast calls for rain.

Silver Springs Cell Phone Policy: If students need to contact home, we will call the parent for them, or they may come to the office to call home. Emergencies will be handled by office and administrative staff.  While students are not permitted to use cell phones during school hours, we know that some parents have provided children with phones for safety reasons. As we cannot be responsible for the loss of a phone, students will need to leave the phone in their backpack (on silent mode) for safekeeping or arrange a storage place with their teacher.  Cell phones should not be brought out with students are recess or at lunch time. Students should not be taking photos or video recordings of other students or staff members. We thank you for clarifying this policy with your child.

Calgary Police Services Back to School Safety Tips- The school year should be safe and educational for everyone. Kids and parents should be aware of the following safety tips:

Make sure your child knows:

  • Their full name, age, address, area code, home phone number and parents' work/cellphone number.
  • How to use a pay phone to make both local and long-distance phone calls.
  • How to contact police, fire and EMS in an emergency (9-1-1) and in a non-emergency (403-266-1234).
  • To use the same route to and from school.
  • Where the safe places are to play (front and backyards, playgrounds).
  • What places to avoid (vacant lots, dark, wooded, bushy areas).

If your child is being followed by a person or car, make sure they know to do the following:

  • turn and run in the opposite direction;
  • get a description and license number of the stranger's vehicle if possible;
  • run to the closest safe place; and,
  • stay in open areas that are visible.

Remember to tell them that uniformed police officers are friends who can be trusted.

Familiarize your child with "the stranger rules" - these rules will help keep them safe.

  • Never talk to strangers.
  • Never take anything from strangers.
  • Never go anywhere with a stranger.
  • Do not be fooled by tricks or phony conversations.
  • If a stranger tries to grab you, yell, scream and kick.
  • Never tell a stranger you are by yourself or that your parents or guardian are not home.
